Many moons ago in the 70s, my Dad was a skint, out-of-work labourer.

One day he heard about a job vacancy in Argentina, fixing the oil pipelines across the country. After researching a bit about the big companies that would do this sort of work he basically added loads of made-up work experience with some of the companies onto his CV. He applied for the job and got it- they actually reckoned he was a bit overqualified! He flew out to Argentina but they realised within a day that he didn’t actually know the first thing about oil pipelines, fortunately they were pretty much stuck with him.

He eventually learnt all about the oil pipeline network in Argentina, stayed there for 18 months and ended up basically running the operation! Seems a totally bonkers story but it’s completely true- I think people were perhaps a bit more lax about investigating work experience in the 70s.

I don’t think, however, that I would be quite capable of deception on such a huge scale!
