Obviously it’s important not to lie in your interview, especially about previous experiences as you will be caught out eventually. But how honest is too honest?

I think it’s important to be honest in all your applications. If there are skills that I’m missing, I usually try to embellish my CV with more skills that I do have. That way I still have something to talk about in an interview, even if it’s not exactly what the employer is looking for. I think you have to be careful with the way you talk about things. If there is something you’re not sure on don’t be negative or put yourself down, but try to show you are willing to learn and develop within the role you are applying for.

What did you have in mind Chloe? It all depends what it is, and in what context… if you were thinking of sticking a load of letters after your name and practicing as something you really shouldn’t be then yeah that might be bad, but if it’s just ignoring the odd ‘bad mistake’ of a previous job or something, that’s acceptable in my book :o)
If you can get away with it like Leonardo diCaprio in Catch Me If You Can, then I take my hat off to you :-)

I was thinking along the lines of if they ask if you can do something, and you know you can’t or you really struggle with it, do you fess up? I always think of that episode of F.R.I.E.N.D.S when Joey admits all the lies he has on his C.V. because you’re supposed to say yes to everything and deal with the consequences later if you get the job. But isn’t this a big risk if you get the job and it’s obvious that you lied because you’re struggling with something?

Sometimes exaggerating your skills a little can be useful, if just to get your foot in the door!
